June 2nd 1953: Queen Elizabeth II coronated
On this day in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Elizabeth became Queen on 6th February 1952 upon the death of her father King George VI, but was officially coronated the next year out of respect for the deceased King. The ceremony at Westminster Abbey was the first coronation to be televised, with 20 million viewers, and greatly increased the popularity of the television in the UK. Elizabeth II continues to reign to this day, this year celebrating her Diamond Jubilee and 60 years on the throne; she is the only British monarch other than Queen Victoria to reach such a milestone.
